Why a girl’s night in?
*Disclaimer: This post was written before the shutdown due to the current health crisis, but there is is a way to do most of these activities social distance style and wearing a mask or virtual if the need arises, it’s better to be safe than sorry..*
Life with a disability is definitely unpredictable so your plans with friends may not happen, even though you may be feeling great and ready to head out the door. If you don’t drive, your ride to hang out with your friends could fall though or something else could surprise you, like what happened with my wheelchair lift. It’s difficult when something like that reminds you of the limitations of your body, your disability. It may not be easy to hang out with your friends when you want to go out, but you could always bring them to you, salvaging your night with a fun alternative.

7 Ideas For A Girl’s Night In
Have A Movie Night: Have you been meaning to watch a movie or two and just never found the time? Have a movie marathon. Get snacks, drinks, and finally watch that movie. Can’t think of a new movie you wanted to see, pick some favorites, you never get tired of watching to get the marathon started. When my wheelchair lift down and I couldn’t go out, my friends and I did something similar. They came over and we ordered food and watched shows on prime video. It was a fun way to hang with my friends when going out wasn’t an option. These days you can do a watch party to have your movie night social distance style.
Have A Game Night: *This is not a good idea in person until we can be safe from the current health crisis, but you can do a virtual party* Play board games or video games with a Nintendo System. When was the last time you played a board game? Pull out a few of the games you have… somewhere and make it a night of old-fashioned board games. If you’re not in the mood to play a board game that could take hours if not, days (monopoly flashbacks anyone?), then video games are another great option. Games like Wii Sports, Just Dance, and Mario Kart are perfect group games to play. Game night is a fun way to switch things up on your next girl’s night and add a little friendly competition.
Host A Party: *This is not a good idea in person until we can be safe from the current health crisis, but you can do a virtual party* If you can’t go out with your friends, bring them to you by hosting a party if you have space. I used to host a party a few days before the end of the year, (pre-health crisis) so we could all see each other and catch up, we kept at it for nearly a decade. One of my friends came up with the idea to make sure I could always attend, hard to miss a get together that’s at your house, after all. It’s a great way to have fun with your friends that’s low key and worry-free especially the accessibility part. You can order a few party platters or have your friends bring stuff, turn on Spotify or Pandora and you’re all set for a fun night at home.

Try A New Recipe: If you use Pinterest you know that you can find just about anything there, especially recipes. Grab your friends and pick out a new dessert or drink to try. You may discover a new favorite and if not at least you had fun. You can combine this with one of the other activities, especially desserts for a game or movie night. It’s girls night after all, desserts are expected. I’m not sure I need to add this here, but just in case I do, here it is. Disclaimer: If you decide to make cocktails, be the legal drinking age and consider turning the girls night into a sleepover if anyone would need to drive to get home, better safe than sorry. Have fun, just do it responsibly.
Have A Spa Day: This is not a good idea in person until we can be safe from the current health crisis, but you can do a virtual one with friends. When was the last time you set aside time for self-care? For your next girl’s night, make the time one of self-care with skincare and mani-pedis. A time to relax and have fun with your friends. You can even give each other makeup makeovers and if doing your own makeup let alone someone else’s may be difficult to accomplish, have your friend do it herself while you pick out the products she uses. After a makeup makeover, you can help your friends pick out the perfect outfit for a special occasion. You’ll end the night feeling great and will have spent some much needed time with your friends.
Have An Instagram Photoshoot: This is not a good idea in person until we can be safe from the current health crisis, but you can do a different virtual activity you need some new photos to update your Instagram? A girl’s night is the perfect time to take some photos. Your friends help you with poses and props for some single shots or you can take a few group shots. Go all out with themes or colors, or do something simple, there is a multitude of options especially when you do this with friends. The photo mishaps are bound to be funny and you can order food/ drinks afterward or use a few of them as props. However, you put together your photoshoot, have fun with it.
Host A Dinner Party: *This is not a good idea in person until we can be safe from the current health crisis, but you can do a virtual activity* Last, but not least, host a dinner party. This girls night idea takes some work to put together. Start preparing the food from the night before, ask your friends to bring stuff as well. Get a little dressed up, order some desserts if you need more, and have some fun with your friends. Although throwing a dinner party takes work it’s a nice change from a laid-back girls night.
