Are you bored with your makeup routine? Stuck in a makeup rut? In my opinion, makeup should be fun, a way to express yourself without saying a word. I wont lie though, it can be easy to fall into a comfortable routine and get stuck there. Let me be clear there is nothing wrong with being comfortable in your routine, but you should never be bored. If you find yourself bored and stuck in a makeup rut then keep reading for my tips on ending it and having fun with makeup again.

How To End Your Makeup Rut
Declutter & Switch Up Your Daily Makeup Routine
It is very easy to get stuck in a makeup rut especially if you have a lot of products and the last things you used are at the top of your makeup collection. This happened often with me especially if I had to rush to do my makeup in the mornings. Get yourself out of that makeup rut, by decluttering your makeup collection one weekend, you never know, you might find your favorite palette or lip gloss that you thought you lost.
Cleaning out your makeup collection makes it easier to switch out the products you use more frequently to do your makeup routine. I usually kept the products that I used to my makeup for everyday wear separate from the rest of my makeup collection so that I didn’t have to search for the products and could get through the routine faster, at least I tried to keep them separate when I was rushing. It didn’t always work out that way. When I was able to keep the products separate, I loved getting through my makeup routine, however, after a while, I noticed that I was comfortable doing the routine and rarely switched out the products for other ones in my collection. This led to boredom with the looks and my makeup routine so don’t be afraid to switch up the products you’re using every few weeks to avoid the same old makeup routine.

Check Social Media For Some Makeup Inspiration
If you are just getting started with makeup and don’t have to get rid of the clutter, find some makeup inspiration. Social media is one of the best places to find makeup inspiration especially when it comes to Instagram and Youtube. These platforms offer tutorials on a variety of looks whether it’s everyday looks, soft glam, or all glammed up, you’d be able to find makeup styles in your comfort zone or try something new. Social media is also a great place to learn about makeup trends that you can add to your looks from the ombre lip, to a cut crease or if you are looking for something simpler a colored liner. These makeup trends can help you try something new for your makeup look without changing the whole thing.
Play Around With Colors, Finishes & Formulas
One of the easier ways to end your makeup rut is to play around with colors and finishes. When I first got into makeup I loved using shimmery eyeshadow sticks when I could and products that would give me a glossy lip. While I still like the occasional glossy lip, I also play around with other products. You can have a foundation that gives you a dewy finish instead of matte one, (if it’s right for your skin) or a matte eyeshadow or lipstick to change your look.

Choosing a different finish for some of the makeup products that you use in your routine, might be easier than changing the color, but playing with color can be so much fun. Following trends like using colored liner instead of black can be cool, though I have to admit a fan of the classic black liner, The use of different colors for your eyeshadow or lipstick is a simple thing but it can help you change your entire look and inspire others and before you know it you’re no longer bored with your makeup routine.
Changing up the type of product you use is another good way to do something to help you change up your look. I’ll admit, this one is a little harder to put into action because not every formula is going to be easy for you to use, but give it a try. If you are going to try products in different formulas and you are not sure about the ease of use, buy product dupes, this way you didn’t spend as much money for something you’re not sure you’ll be able to use.
Take Advantage Of Free Samples
When the cashiers would put my purchases in the bag for during checkout, at least before the health concerns, more often then not, there would be a free sample in there. I’ll admit I rarely tried these items, but every once in a while I do. Free samples are a great way to try to test out new products, formulas, and most importantly the ease of use of a product. Although we’re still not shopping in stores, getting free samples when there’s a promotion if you can or trading in points when making a purchase is a good option for online shopping.
It is easy to fall into a makeup rut, to get comfortable with the looks you create, but it’s also worth it to step outside your comfort zone. The next time you get bored with your makeup routine, look for makeup inspiration, play around with trends, colors, formulas, and finishes. There are so many options when it comes to makeup, that’s one of my favorite aspects of it so if you want to try something new with your makeup routine go for it, but most importantly have fun.
