Welcome To The Sitting Beauty Diaries.
Having a disability enables you to see the world differently, at least for me. There are countless moments of problem-solving to do even the simplest tasks. Laws and guidelines exist to make it easier for us to live normal lives, but that only goes so far. One of the biggest reasons is because people with disabilities need a seat at the table when talking about laws to help them, sometimes that’s not considered and that is where the problem lies.
Now, this blog isn’t tackling anything so big… yet. I’m focused on something else, but no less important, given that I started a blog about it after all: beauty, fashion, and disability.
Say What?
If you’re trying to see my point, but not getting it, disability or not, you’re proving me right for starting a blog like this. Most of society, I think don’t know what to make of people in wheelchairs that are young. They don’t see women who like to go out with their friends, work, go on dates, wear makeup, be fashionable and do everything else life has to offer, yet we want these things just like everyone else.
Why I Created This Blog
People don’t see the woman in the wheelchair, all she is is what her disability shows people and nothing else. Let’s change that. I want The Sitting Beauty Diaries to be a blog about beauty, fashion, and life with a disability, because as Jordan Bone, a beauty influencer, quotes in her book My Beautiful Struggle, “you can be glamorous and a quadriplegic, there’s no law that says otherwise.” Sadly after thinking about that quote and talking to a few others, I realized some women with disabilities don’t bother too much with makeup for a few reasons. I learned they don’t think it will work with their disability or believe that people will only focus on their disability, not them as people, which if you’re nodding your head you know unfortunately at times it’s true.
I want The Sitting Beauty Diaries to focus on these topics because I believe that if you’re passionate about these topics like I am, you should have a resource that takes disability concerns into account. The world has recently become more invested in accessibility, especially accessible or adaptive fashion, (not a huge fan of this term by the way), but we still have a long way to go. We may not have a full seat at the table for the time being, but until then, I’m creating a space to talk about it and share my story of life with a disability in the process.
What You Can Expect To See On The Sitting Beauty Diaries
I’m beyond excited for you guys to see everything I’ve been planning on the blog. This blog has been through many phases with me and you can read about how it all got started here, but I’m focusing on the blog’s content moving forward.
The blog will have four main categories
- Beauty
- Fashion
- Disability
- and Lifestyle
Disability or not, my goal is to write content that is helpful to you as a reader. The posts will have aspects of disability, naturally because that is my life, my story. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy my blog if you don’t have a disability or one that affects you differently than mine affects me. Like I said earlier, women with disabilities just want to live their lives, just like everyone else. I hope this blog teaches you beauty tips, fashion tips, and overall, inspires you. I’m just one woman sharing experiences with you, hoping that you’ll be living beautifully with your disability.
~Until Next Time
